Do I Need an RSA Certification Before I Start Work?

So you’ve been looking at this job and it says you need an RSA to be considered for the job. Do you actually need one? And for what circumstances?

What is an RSA?

An RSA or Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol is a course you must complete if you’re wanting to work in any place that sells or serves alcohol. This unit is required by law in all Australian states and territories before you can work in a licensed venue.

The RSA will provide you with vital skills and knowledge that will equip you to perform your role at a licensed venue. Through your RSA course you will learn how to act lawfully and professionally in an environment where alcohol is sold or served.

You will learn how to assist customers to drink within a reasonable limit—when to “refuse service”, how to identify customers who’ve drunk past their limit and the penalties associated with irresponsible service of alcohol. You’ll learn what a standard drink is and what that little line you sometimes see on glasses in licensed venues is there for (hint – it’s not what you think!).

Now you might be worried that you’ll have to give up your entire day to a face to face course to complete your RSA course; however, online RSA courses are a great option if you’re looking for a course you can complete in your own time and at your own pace!

Do I actually need an RSA?

If you’re working in a licensed venue or anywhere that retails alcohol, you’ll need an RSA. It’s required by law and you need it from day one to be able to complete your duties – or you and your boss could be hit with a pretty hefty fine (that’s not a very good first day!).

As I mentioned, it will also provide you with a number of important skills which will help you to perform your role at a licensed venue. You’re also going to need an RSA if you work as any of the following

  • Food and beverage attendant,
  • Retail liquor sales person,
  • Winery, brewery and distillery cellar door staff,
  • Supplier sales representative,
  • Security staff who monitors behaviour,
  • Venue licensee.

So Where Do I Get an RSA?

There are a number of places that provide responsible service of alcohol (RSA) training, both in-person and online – so you don’t need to worry about sacrificing your whole day to some boring in-person course! This way you can choose at what pace you learn and at what time.

How Do I tell Who’s a Good Online RSA Provider?

There are a lot of providers available to you who you can complete your RSA online training with. When you’re looking at who’s best for you, you really need to assess how you’re going to use your certification.

It’s important to look at what states and territories the course provider is recognised in. For example, you could be in Queensland and do a course and then realise that, although the course is accepted in the Northern Territory, the course isn’t recognised in Queensland, which means you’ve just wasted your time and money!

Of course, if you’re moving to the Northern Territory and not planning to move for a while, then that course may be the perfect one for you. It’s really just a matter of thinking about how you’re going to use your RSA training and what will work for you.

I’ve Completed My Course – Now What?

Once you have completed your RSA online training and received your statement of attainment you’ve achieved the minimum training requirements – just check your specific state/territories additional training requiremnts – if they have any! You’re gained the skills and knowledge to begin selling and serving alcohol in licensed venues so you can get that job now!

Why You Can’t Complete Online RSA Training In Victoria

In Victoria, completing a Responsible Service of Alcohol course from an approved Registered Training Organisation (RTO) enables you to work in a number of licensed hospitality and entertainment venues upon completion. But unlike a lot of the other states, Victoria does not accept online training as a valid form of RSA accreditation.

Due to these specific state regulations, RSA training in Victoria cannot be completed online like our other state RSA courses. Instead, you must enrol in a face to face training course.

1) Why can’t  I complete the RSA course online with etrainu?

Current legislation in Victoria requires that anyone who serves, prepares, sells, stocks or provide samples of alcoholic beverages must hold a current RSA certificate. Failure could see you or employer with a pretty nasty fine.

If you work in any of the following venues, chances are you will need RSA training:

  • Bars & Pubs
  • Retail liquor outlets
  • Wineries
  • Breweries and distilleries.

As such, it applies to a number of different roles such as the bartender, food and beverage attendant, room service or flight attendant, floor staff or manager and various security staff in a licensed premise.

2) Why do I need an RSA?

Since February 2012, the Victorian Commission Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR) have regulated all of Victoria’s gambling and liquor industries to achieve positive outcomes for the community.

Amendments to the Liquor Control Reform Act 1998 now require mandatory face-to-face training as a major part of RSA training. Those who hold an RSA are also required to complete RSA online refresher course every three years.

For more information, please visit: http://www.vcglr.vic.gov.au/

The VCGLR specify that courses must be only four hours in duration concluding with a closed book exam.

3) Where can I complete the training?

While we regretfully cannot offer the online course in Victoria, there are a number of state approved providers that can.

View the current RSA training providers list to see which venue is closest to you.

Why You Can’t Complete An Online RSA For NSW

Unfortunately, securing a RSA in New South Wales cannot be completed online like our other state RSA courses. But the process is still relatively simple. Let’s go through it.

1) Why can’t I complete the course online?

It’s a legal requirement of the New South Wales State government. Basically, if you want to work with or around alcohol, you will need both a RSA Certificate and a photo ID competency card.

It isn’t just a requirement for bartenders either, you’ll also need it if you:

  • Are a supplier alcohol
  • Are a licensee
  • Food and Beverage Attendant
  • Room Service or Flight Attendant
  • Work as a crowd controller or as security staff.

So chances are if you work in any sort of bar, retail liquor outlets and wineries, breweries and distilleries, you will need to undertake the course.

For more information, please visit http://www.olgr.nsw.gov.au/courses_home.asp

2) If I can’t do this training online, where can I do it?

Unfortunately at this stage, etrainu cannot provide online RSA courses  for those wishing to work in New South Wales due to current state regulations.

RSA courses are conducted on a weekly basis in a number of cities and regional areas in New South Wales, so be sure to consult the list of approved RSA training providers to see which one is closest to you.

 3) Why do I need an RSA to work in NSW?

Sadly, because of the increase of alcohol-related violence in NSW, the State Government approved legislation to suspend online RSA training on the 30th January 2013 to tackle the issue.

Until changes have been made to the former online course, securing a RSA in NSW can only be through face-to face courses. But if this changes, we’ll be the first to let you know!

Even when times are tough, it’s comforting to know that Australians will always love a drink! So why not become a bartender.

Why You Can’t Get A RSA Online For Tasmania

A lot of people have been calling our help desk asking why online RSA training for certain states like TAS, NSW and VIC is not offered on our website.
The major difference between RSA training in Tasmania and other states is that it cannot be completed online and must have a face to face component.

1) Why is this course not offered online with etrainu?

Firstly, it’s a legal requirement that could see you stung with a large fine if you are caught operating without one. Anyone who serves, prepares, sells, stocks or provide samples of alcoholic beverages must hold a current RSA certificate

But more importantly, it’s in place to protect you and the people around you from any unfortunate circumstances.

2) Why I can’t get my RSA online, how do I get accredited?

Unfortunately, etrainu cannot offer an online RSA for those wishing to work in Tasmania. You will need to book a face-to-face session with an approved training organisation.

Consult the list of approved training organisations for details to secure a place.

3) Why do I need an RSA to work in Tasmania?

While states such Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, Northern Territory all accept online training, no online RSA will be accepted by the Tasmanian Commissioner for Licensing.

As a result, you are required to complete your RSA course face-to-face in a classroom setting under the supervision of a qualified instructor.
