About the training

This free training package includes three short courses. Learn about positive behaviour support, human rights and trauma informed support. Build skills to make a real impact by learning how to support people in safe, respectful and person-centred way.

Cost:

This training is available for free up to 15,000 disability support workers until July 2027

About the courses

Positive Behaviour Support looks at why a person may use behaviours that can harm themselves or others.  It focuses on meeting the person’s needs, building their skills and creating safe supportive environments. The goal is to improve quality of life and protect their human rights.

These courses work together to build a full understanding of Positive Behaviour Support.

Positive Behaviour Support

This course will help you learn what Positive Behaviour Support is and how to use it in your work.

Time to complete the course: 1 hour and 30 minutes (self-paced)

Topics covered:

  • What is positive behaviour support?
  • Quality of life: choice and control
  • Listening and communicating
  • Being aware of sensory needs and preferences
  • Upholding the values of positive behaviour support

Human Rights and You - Zero Tolerance

This course will help you learn about human rights, why they are important and how to protect the rights of the people you support.

Time to complete the course: 3 hours and 20 minutes (self-paced)

Topics covered:

  • What are human rights
  • Rights and responsibilities
  • When rights go wrong
  • Asking for help

Trauma-Informed Support Films

These short films will help you understand what trauma is and how it might affect the people you support.


Time to complete the course: 35 minutes (self-paced)

Topics covered:

  • The meaning of trauma and how we can understand it
  • What a trauma-informed approach looks like and how we can use it
  • How to build networks of support to assist with trauma

Who can access the training

This initiative is open to disability support workers employed by registered and unregistered NDIS providers who support NDIS Participants.

What you will gain

As a disability support worker, you will learn how to protect the rights of people with disability and better understand how to provide respectful and person-centred support. These three short courses can help you feel more confident when supporting people who may use behaviours that can harm themselves or others. You’ll also learn about the main ideas behind positive behaviour support with real-life examples.

  • A certificate of completion when you finish each course.
  • Flexible online access that works around your job and routine.
  • Training that you can start and finish whenever it suits you.
  • Access until July 2027 to complete the courses.

Have you already got access to the NDS Workforce Essentials?

Workers who have already completed courses in the NDS Workforce Essentials eLibrary do not need to register, as these courses are included in that training package.

How to register

This training is free for up to 15,000 disability support workers. Places will be allocated as registration are received. We encourage early registration to secure access. Once all places are allocated, registrations will close.
