The CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support is a nationally recognised qualification that prepares individuals to provide quality care and support to people in aged or disability care. This accredited program equips learners with the practical skills and knowledge needed to assist clients with daily living, promote independence, and maintain dignity and wellbeing.

Core Units

To be awarded this qualification, your team must complete 15 units of competency:
  • CHCCCS031 – Provide individualised support
  • CHCCCS040 – Support independence and wellbeing
  • CHCCCS038 – Facilitate the empowerment of people receiving support
  • CHCDIV001 – Work with diverse people
  • CHCCCS041 – Recognise healthy body systems
  • CHCCOM005 – Communicate and work in health or community services
  • CHCLEG001 – Work legally and ethically
  • HLTWHS002 – Follow safe work practices for direct client 
  • HLTINF006 – Apply basic principles and practices of infection prevention and control

Government-funded subsidy for QLD residents

The Career Start program is a key initiative under the Queensland Government’s Annual Vet Investment Plan. Career Start provides a government subsidy to support eligible individuals in completing their first post-school Certificate III level qualification.
To be eligible for Career Start funding learners must:
  • be a Queensland resident
  • be aged 15 years or above, and no longer at school.
  • be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident (including humanitarian entrants), or a temporary resident with the necessary visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residency
  • not hold, or be enrolled in, a Certificate III level or higher qualification that was completed within the past 10 years (this does not include qualifications completed at school or foundation skills training)
Training is subsidised by the Queensland government and is paid to the RTO providing the training. There is a necessary co-contribution fee from the student for enrolment and training.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for Certificate III in Individual Support, you must fulfil the following requirements:
  • aged 15 years or older at time of enrolment
  • be self-motivated to learn on their own
  • have basic computer skills
  • have reliable internet connection
  • have a working computer or laptop
  • deal with physical demands of manual tasks (e.g., bending, squatting, repetitive movements)
  • be on your feet for extended periods of times
  • The ability to apply and obtain the relevant regulatory clearances and checks relevant to this sector (see Vocational Placement section for further info)
Please note: Carers Queensland does not offer courses and qualifications to overseas students on student visas.

Vocational placement

As part of your Certificate III in Individual Support, you will acquire valuable on-the-job experience. We can locate a host employer/organisation for your vocational placement. Our strong partnerships with local community service organisations allow you to develop the necessary skills while potentially building essential connections with future employers.

Students must complete at least 120 hours in direct support work at one or more aged care, home and community, disability, or community services organisations as part of their Certificate III in Individual Support Disability.

In addition, before commencing placement, you must have:
  • Working with Children Check (Blue Card)
  • NDIS Workers Screening Clearance
  • National Police Clearance
  • Influenza Vaccination (annually) – mandatory
  • COVID-19 Vaccinations – at discretion of Org.
