Course overview
Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that affect how a person eats, exercises, and sees their body. More than one million Australians live with an eating disorder, and many never get support. Support workers are often the first to notice the early signs.
This course helps workers recognise the main types of eating disorders, understand what causes them, and respond in a way that is calm, respectful, and person-centred. It looks at how trauma, limiting beliefs, and everyday triggers shape a person’s behaviour, and how to support recovery without focusing on food or weight.
Learners also build practical skills in co-regulation and de-escalation, learn how to follow a care plan and keep someone safe during moments of distress, and see why looking after their own wellbeing matters.

Is this course about diagnosing eating disorders? No. It is explicitly clear that workers should not diagnose or self-diagnose. It focuses on recognising signs, responding safely, and knowing when to escalate or seek professional help.
Does a support worker need a clinical background to take it? No. It is written for support workers and carers. It teaches practical, non-clinical skills such as following a care plan, co-regulation, de-escalation, and supporting daily living within a care team.
Does the course cover the worker's own wellbeing? Yes. A dedicated self-care section addresses compassion fatigue and burnout, and covers boundaries, debriefing, and personal regulation as part of ethical, sustainable support.
