Supporting Someone with Bipolar Disorder
Mental health course for anyone supporting someone with Bipolar Disorder
- Mental Health
- Disability Support

Course overview
Bipolar disorder is a lifelong mental health condition that causes noticeable mood swings between high (manic) and low (depressive) episodes. This course helps support workers understand what bipolar disorder is, its symptoms, and how it affects daily life.
Learners look at how to recognise early warning signs, respond to triggers, and tell the difference between symptoms and behaviours of concern. The course covers practical, trauma-informed support, from co-regulation and de-escalation to gently challenging limiting beliefs.
It also focuses on promoting independence, following the person’s care plan, and encouraging community participation. Learners apply what they cover through a realistic scenario, then finish with ways to protect their own wellbeing while supporting others.

Who is this course for?
It's designed for disability and mental health support workers, carers, and service providers who support people living with bipolar disorder. No clinical background is needed. The focus is practical, everyday support, not diagnosis or treatment.
What will I learn?
You'll learn what bipolar disorder is, its symptoms across manic and depressive episodes, and how it affects daily life. You'll also learn to recognise early warning signs and triggers, tell the difference between symptoms and behaviours of concern, respond safely using co-regulation and de-escalation, gently challenge limiting beliefs, and promote independence. The course finishes with ways to look after your own wellbeing.
How long does it take, and is there an assessment?
The course takes about 40 minutes. Rather than a separate final quiz, your understanding is checked through a realistic scenario following "Mark", a man living with bipolar disorder, where you respond to changing situations across several parts and get feedback on each choice.
