Course overview

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop after someone experiences or witnesses a traumatic event. This course helps support workers understand what PTSD is, the symptoms it causes, and the triggers that can bring distress to the surface.

Learners look at how to tell the difference between trauma symptoms and behaviours of concern, and how to respond safely when someone is triggered or escalating. The course covers practical, trauma-informed support, from co-regulation and de-escalation to gently challenging limiting beliefs.

It also focuses on helping people rebuild confidence, independence, and connection through strengths-based support. Learners apply what they cover through a realistic scenario, then finish with ways to protect their own wellbeing while supporting others.

Frequently asked questions

Who is this course for? It's designed for disability and mental health support workers, carers, and service providers who support people living with PTSD. No clinical background is needed. The focus is practical, everyday support, not diagnosis or treatment.

What will I learn? You'll learn what PTSD is, its symptoms, causes, and triggers, and how to tell the difference between trauma symptoms and behaviours of concern. You'll also learn to respond safely when someone is triggered, use co-regulation and de-escalation techniques, gently challenge limiting beliefs, and support independence through strengths-based approaches. The course finishes with ways to look after your own wellbeing.

How long does it take, and is there an assessment? The course takes about 35 minutes. Rather than a separate final quiz, your understanding is checked through a realistic scenario following "Jack", a man living with PTSD after a car accident, where you respond to situations and get feedback on each choice.
