Person-Centred Emergency and Disaster Management

Course overview

Emergencies and disasters can disrupt everyday supports without warning. For people with disability, that disruption can quickly become a safety risk if planning is unclear or supports stop.

This course shows support workers how to apply a person-centred approach to emergency planning, response and recovery. It covers what an Emergency and Disaster Management Plan contains, how official warnings work, and the role of the support worker before, during and after an emergency.

Two scenarios let learners practise these skills, supporting one person preparing for extreme fire danger and another responding to a storm.

What you'll learn

By the end of this course, learners will be able to apply:

  • A person-centred approach to emergency planning
  • Follow an Emergency and Disaster Management Plan
  • Interpret official warnings and fire danger ratings
  • Carry out their responsibilities through response and recovery
