Course overview

Asthma is a common long-term condition that affects breathing. It ranges from mild to severe, and a flare-up can become a medical emergency. Support workers often play a key role in helping someone manage it safely day to day.

This course explains what asthma is, how it works, and what can trigger a flare-up. Learners look at the main types of asthma medication, the devices used to take it, and how to follow a person's asthma action plan so support stays consistent and person-centred.

It also builds confidence in recognising the signs of a flare-up, telling well-controlled asthma from poorly controlled asthma, and responding in an emergency using asthma first aid. Throughout, learners are reminded to work within their scope and to document and report changes.

What you'll learn

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Recognise what asthma is, its types, and common triggers
  • Identify the main asthma medications and the devices used to take them
  • Follow a person's asthma action plan to support consistent, person-centred care
  • Recognise the signs of a flare-up and tell well-controlled from poorly controlled asthma
  • Respond to an asthma emergency using asthma first aid and know when to call 000

Frequently asked questions

Can support workers diagnose asthma or give medication beyond their training? No. Diagnosing is outside a support worker's scope. Workers provide only support they have been trained and assessed as competent to perform, and they follow the person's asthma action plan.

What is the 4x4x4 method? It is the asthma first aid method from the NSW Government and Asthma Australia: give four puffs of a blue or grey reliever (one puff, four breaths, repeated), wait four minutes, then give four more puffs if there is no improvement. If there is still no improvement, call 000 and keep giving four puffs every four minutes until help arrives.

What is the difference between a reliever and a preventer? A reliever works almost immediately to relax tightened airway muscles and ease flare-up symptoms, and should always be carried. A preventer is taken daily and works over two to four weeks to reduce inflammation and stop flare-ups. Needing a reliever more than twice a week can signal poorly controlled asthma.
