Course overview

Every shift brings risk. From a loose handrail to a hot day at the markets, support workers need to spot hazards early and respond the right way.

Risk Management for Support Workers provides learners with a practical, step-by-step approach to identifying and managing risk. It explores key responsibilities, duty of care, and the rights of the people they support to make informed choices and maintain independence.

Learners use the SWEEP framework to identify hazards across self, work, equipment, environment, and the person, and a risk matrix to weigh likelihood against consequence.

A practice scenario walks learners through supporting Jude on an outdoor market outing on a hot day: spotting hazards, applying the hierarchy of control, monitoring for signs of harm, responding when something goes wrong, and documenting it afterwards.

What you'll learn

By the end of this course, learners will be able to

  • Identify hazards using SWEEP
  • Assess risk using a risk matrix
  • Apply the hierarchy of control
  • Balance duty of care with dignity of risk, report risks, hazards, near misses and incidents.
