Manual handling shows up across most disability support work. Repositioning a person in bed, helping with personal care, supporting mobility, using a hoist or transfer board, and moving a person in and out of a vehicle all carry risk to the person and the worker if they are not done well.
This online manual handling course builds the practical skills to do them safely, every shift, every person. The Communicate, Prepare, Check framework runs through every module, giving workers one approach they can apply to every task.
A certificate of completion is issued at the end.

Module 1: Safe Support Practices: The foundations: safe support practices and the four-step risk management process that runs through every manual handling task.
Module 2: Personal Care Support: Manual handling in personal care, body mechanics, and how to support participation while keeping everyone safe.
Module 3: Mobility Support: Supporting mobility, bed movement, and sit-to-stand techniques. The Communicate, Prepare, Check framework in practice.
Module 4: Aids and Equipment Support: Transfer belts, transfer boards, slings, and hoists. When to use each, how to use them safely, and what to check first.
Module 5: Vehicle Transfer Support: Wheelchair handling and getting a person safely in and out of a vehicle.

How long is the manual handling course? Around 225 minutes across five modules, fully self-paced.

What is the Communicate, Prepare, Check framework? Communicate, Prepare, Check is a three-step framework that runs through every manual handling task. It keeps the person and the worker safe by making sure everyone knows what is about to happen, the environment is set up properly, and nothing has changed before the task begins. The course teaches each step and shows how to apply it.
Does the course cover hoists and slings? Yes. A full module covers transfer belts, transfer boards, slings, and hoists, including when to use each one and how to use them safely.
Does the course cover vehicle transfers? Yes. A dedicated module covers wheelchair handling and how to move a person safely in and out of a vehicle.
