Course Overview

Around 1 in 5 Australians live with disability, yet most workplaces are still designed without them in mind. Much of what holds people back at work comes down to the barriers around them, the spaces, tools and everyday habits that were never built for everyone, rather than disability itself. Once you can see those barriers, you can start to remove them.

The etrainu Disability Awareness and Inclusion course helps employees and leaders understand disability, recognise the barriers people face, and respond in ways that make work more accessible for everyone. It moves from awareness through to everyday practice across three short, connected modules.

Each module uses video, real workplace scenarios, interactive activities and knowledge checks, so the learning stays practical and easy to apply.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand what disability is, including that much of it is not visible and that around 1 in 5 Australians live with disability
  • Recognise and challenge the common myths and unconscious bias that shape how disability is treated at work
  • Identify the five main types of barriers (physical, attitudinal, communication, systemic and digital) and how to remove them
  • Respond well when someone discloses a disability or asks for an adjustment
  • Make simple, low-cost adjustments and run meetings and communications that include everyone
  • Understand key legal responsibilities, including the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Privacy Act 1988

Course Topics

Module 1: Myths and Misconceptions

Most of us absorb ideas about disability from the world around us, and many of them are inaccurate. This foundational module clears the ground. It replaces the common myths with what the evidence actually shows, so you can start to see disability, and your own assumptions, more clearly.

You will meet people with lived experience of disability, look at what the data says about disability in Australia, work through the eight assumptions heard most often in workplaces, understand where
bias comes from, and learn how to talk about disability respectfully.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand disability, including the diversity of disability experiences and the barriers people may face.
  • Challenge common myths, recognise the impact of unconscious bias, and use respectful, inclusive language.
  • Build confidence in creating a more inclusive workplace for people with disability.

Duration: 45 mins

Module 2: The Impact of Barriers

Most of what disables people at work is not the disability itself. It is the barriers around them: the spaces, tools and ways of working that were never designed with everyone in mind. These barriers are easy to miss if they do not affect you. This module helps you see them, understand what they cost, and start removing them.

Building on the Myths and misconceptions module, The Impact of Barriers takes you through the five main types of barriers people with disability face at work, what happens when they are left in place, and the practical steps you can take in your own day to reduce them

Learning Outcomes

  • Recognise workplace barriers and understand their impact on people, organisations and inclusion.
  • Understand your legal responsibilities and the importance of removing barriers.
  • Identify and take practical action to create more accessible and inclusive workplaces.

Duration: 45 mins

Module 3: Being Inclusive at Work

This module turns awareness into everyday practice. It is built on four simple principles (ask, don't assume; lead with the person, not the diagnosis; adjust the environment, not the person; and keep disclosure confidential by default) and shows how to apply them across the moments that matter, from a disclosure conversation to a performance review.

It is the most practical and the most detailed module in the series, with a stronger focus on what leaders and managers can do.

 Learning Outcomes

  • Apply inclusive behaviours and communicate respectfully to support people with disability.
  • Create more accessible and inclusive workplaces through practical adjustments and inclusive ways of working.
  • Understand your legal responsibilities and take meaningful action to foster an inclusive workplace.

Duration: 60 minutes
